Shampoo for Dogs & Cats with Sensitive Skin (Malaysia Guide)
Short answer: for a dog or cat with sensitive skin in Malaysia, wash with a gentle shampoo, dilute it properly, rinse twice as long as you think you need to, and finish with a leave-on oatmeal conditioner. The routine we recommend most for dogs is Davis Melaleuca Shampoo followed by Davis Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner. For cats, start with the oatmeal routine instead.

Why so many Malaysian pets have sensitive skin
Three things come up again and again.
- Heat and humidity. A coat that stays damp after a bath, or after a rainy walk, keeps the skin underneath warm and wet for hours.
- Air-con all night. Indoor dogs go from humid air outside to dry air-conditioned rooms. Skin that swings between the two often ends up both oily and dry.
- Shampoo mixed too strong. This is the most common one, and the easiest to fix. More shampoo does not clean more. It leaves residue, and residue is what sensitive skin reacts to.

Mix it right: the step most owners skip
Davis shampoos are professional concentrates. They are made to be diluted with water before they touch your pet. When an owner tells us a shampoo "didn't suit" their dog, the bottle was usually mixed too strong. Diluting more almost always gives a better result.
- Melaleuca Shampoo, 5:1: 1 part shampoo to 5 parts water. In the 500ml Davis dilution bottle that is about 83ml of shampoo, then top up with water.
- Baking Soda & Oatmeal Shampoo, 10:1: about 45ml of shampoo in the 500ml bottle, then top up with water.
- Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner: no rinse. It stays on the coat after the bath.
How to bathe a pet with sensitive skin
- Brush first, so the shampoo reaches the skin instead of tangles.
- Use lukewarm water, not hot.
- Apply the diluted shampoo and massage gently. Leave it 3 to 5 minutes. No hard scrubbing.
- Rinse until the water runs clear, then rinse again. Leftover shampoo is one of the most common reasons for itching after a bath.
- Apply Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner and leave it in.
- Dry fully, right down to the skin, especially in thick or double coats. A damp coat in Malaysian weather undoes a good bath.
Most sensitive-skin dogs do well with a bath every 1 to 2 weeks. Bathing more often than that with a strong mix usually makes things worse, not better.
What is in the bottles
- Melaleuca Shampoo: tea tree oil, vitamin E, wheat germ, rosemary and coconut oil. 5:1 dilution.
- Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner: colloidal oatmeal and aloe vera. Leave-on, no rinse.
- Baking Soda & Oatmeal Shampoo: colloidal oatmeal, aloe vera and baking soda with a white tea fragrance. 10:1 dilution.
- Pramoxine Anti-Itch Shampoo (Davis Medicated Series): 1% pramoxine HCl with colloidal oatmeal. Ready to use, no dilution.
Not sure yet? Start with the trial set
If your pet reacts to most shampoos, the 3-in-1 Oatmeal Trial Set has small bottles of all three oatmeal products, so you can test the routine before buying full size.

When to see a vet first
A shampoo routine keeps skin clean and comfortable. It is not a substitute for a check-up. See your veterinarian before changing shampoo if you notice open wounds, bald patches, a strong smell from the skin itself, or scratching that keeps your pet awake at night.
Buying for your groomer?
Many owners buy Davis because their groomer asked them to bring a bottle to the salon. If that is you, check the bottle name against what your groomer asked for. For sensitive-skin dogs, the pairing we recommend is Melaleuca with Oatmeal Leave-On, and you can use the same bottles at home between salon visits.
Sensitive skin FAQ
What is the best shampoo for a dog with sensitive skin in Malaysia?
Choose a gentle shampoo and dilute it correctly. Our most recommended routine is Davis Melaleuca Shampoo at 5:1, followed by Davis Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner. For cats and puppies, use the Davis oatmeal routine instead.
How often should I bathe a dog with sensitive skin?
Every 1 to 2 weeks suits most dogs. Use a properly diluted shampoo, rinse thoroughly and dry the coat fully. Bathing more often with a strong mix tends to dry the skin out.
Why is my dog itchier after a bath?
Usually shampoo residue or a coat left damp. Dilute the shampoo more, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry right down to the skin.
Can I use the same shampoo on my cat?
For cats, start with the Davis oatmeal routine: Baking Soda & Oatmeal Shampoo and Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner. Always check the label of any product before using it on a cat.
Is oatmeal shampoo good for sensitive skin?
Colloidal oatmeal is one of the most common ingredients in shampoos made for sensitive skin. Davis Baking Soda & Oatmeal Shampoo and Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner both contain colloidal oatmeal and aloe vera.
