Best Cat Shampoo in Malaysia: How to Choose
Share
Short answer: there is no single best cat shampoo; the best one is made for the job your cat needs and has a label that lists cats. For heavy shedding, use Davis De-Shed Plus, made for cats only, followed by De-Shed Rinse. For dry or sensitive skin, use a diluted oatmeal routine. If your vet named an ingredient, buy the bottle that matches it. Cats need far fewer baths than dogs, and in Malaysian humidity the coat must be dried fully afterwards.
Pick the shampoo by what your cat needs
Sheds everywhere, long coat
De-Shed Plus + De-Shed Rinse
De-Shed Plus (cats only, 10:1) with panthenol, protein and amino acids, then De-Shed Rinse (10:1). Common for Persian, Maine Coon and Ragdoll.
Dry, flaky or sensitive skin
Oatmeal routine
Baking Soda & Oatmeal Shampoo (10:1), then Oatmeal Leave-On Conditioner, no rinse.
Your vet named an ingredient
Match the bottle
Davis Medicated Series bottles list the active and its percentage on the front. Check that the label lists cats, and follow your vet.
Not sure what your cat will accept
Start small
The 3-in-1 Oatmeal Trial Set has small bottles of all three oatmeal products.
Check that the label lists cats
Many grooming shampoos are made for dogs and cats, but not all. Davis makes two de-shedding shampoos for this reason: De-Shed Shampoo is for dogs, and De-Shed Plus is the cat version. Cats groom by licking, so whatever stays in the coat gets swallowed. Pick a bottle whose label lists cats, and rinse until the water runs completely clear.
Tea tree oil and cats
Never put neat (undiluted) tea tree oil on a cat. The Merck Veterinary Manual reports tea tree oil as the essential oil most often involved in pet poisonings, and explains that cats lack an enzyme dogs have, which makes them more sensitive to some compounds found in essential oils. For cats, stick to shampoos whose label lists cats.
How often to bathe a cat
Much less often than a dog. Most short-haired indoor cats keep themselves clean and only need a bath when the coat is dirty, greasy or after an accident. Long-haired cats that shed heavily benefit from a de-shed bath during heavy shedding, with brushing in between. Keep each bath short and calm, use lukewarm water and keep water away from the face and ears.
Shedding or hair loss?
Loose fur on the sofa is shedding, and a de-shed wash plus regular brushing clears the loose undercoat before it ends up there. Bald patches, broken hair, or red and sore skin are not normal shedding. See your vet before you bathe a cat with those signs.
Cat shampoo FAQ
What is the best cat shampoo in Malaysia for shedding?
Davis De-Shed Plus Shampoo, made for cats only, followed by De-Shed Rinse. Both mix at 10:1. Brush before and after the bath.
Can I use dog shampoo on my cat?
Only if the label says it is suitable for cats. Some dog shampoos are not, which is why Davis sells De-Shed Plus separately for cats.
Can I use miconazole shampoo on my cat?
The Davis Miconazole Shampoo label lists dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Use it on a cat only when your vet has asked for miconazole, and follow the contact time on the label.
How do I dilute cat shampoo?
For a 10:1 shampoo such as De-Shed Plus, put about 45ml of shampoo in the Davis 500ml dilution bottle and top up with water. Mixing it stronger leaves residue, not a cleaner cat.
Do I need to dry my cat after a bath?
Yes. Towel off, then dry fully in a warm room or with a quiet dryer on a low setting. A coat left damp in Malaysian humidity stays cold and starts to smell.
